Keynote speakers:

PhD Hubert Rauscher: “Identification and measurements of nanomaterials”
Joint Research Centre (JRC), European Commission, Italy

PhD Volker Bachmann: “Health and safety hazards of nanomaterials”
Federal Institute for Occupational Safety & Health (BAuA), Germany

There is a concern in the public health community about the contribution of nanoparticles to human health. Nanoparticles are usually defined as particles that are between 1 and 100 nm in diameter. Of particular interest is their ability to circumvent primary airway defences and reach the deep lung. However, particles in the size range 100 to 1000 nm also need attention since they can be just as harmful as nanoparticles when inhaled.

Traditional gravimetric measuring techniques have limitations while assessing exposure-related health risks of particles below sizes of 1000 nm. Currently, there is no consensus for a standardized method for the measurement or reporting of nanoparticles in workplaces or the environment, and no clear guidelines on acceptable nanoparticle levels.

Besides the two well-known keynote speakers, the workshop includes several national speakers from academia, industry, and standardization, as well as from government agencies including the Swedish Work Environment Authority who will present their view on nanosafety at workplaces. Group discussions are included in the program on the topics “Occupational environment measurements” and “Collaboration between industry and academia”.
