OECD evaluation of in vitro methods in testing programme for the safety of manufactured nanomaterials
The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) has recently published a report entitled Evaluation of in vitro methods for human hazard assessment applied in the OECD Testing Programme for the Safety of Manufactured Nanomaterials. It is report No. 85 in the series on the safety of manufactured nanomaterials (MNMs).
The Testing Programme for the Testing of Manufactured Nanomaterials tested 11 materials to generate information, including their physico-chemical properties, environmental fate, and environmental and mammalian toxicity.
The report evaluates information from Test Guideline (TG) and non-test guideline studies on toxicokinetics, eye irritation and damage, genotoxicity and cytotoxicity. General observations are made and potential next steps identified. Potential next steps concern TG 428, TG 431, TG437, TG 471, TG 487 and genotoxicity assays.
In addition to the work that is currently underway at the OECD Working Party on Manufactured Nanomaterials (WPMN) and International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) Technical Committee 229 to develop standards and guidance for some cytotoxicity assays, the report states that the Testing Programme should consider evaluation and further development of the assays that are routinely used to test MNMs. For instance, the assays used to determine the potential of MNMs to cause oxidative stress and those used to assess endpoints specific to immunological implications of exposure to MNMs.
